Sherman County Assessment

Assessor

The County Assessor is responsible for planning, organizing and supervising the activities of the office as prescribed by the Oregon Revised Statutes. The Assessor oversees the valuation and assessment of all real residential property, business personal property, manufactured structures, commercial property and agricultural land for property tax purposes in a fair and equitable manner as mandated by the State of Oregon. The Deputy Assessor works with the Assessor.

Property taxes fund local taxing districts and County agencies. Tax calculations are based on the assessed value of each individual property. Annually, this office determines the property’s real market value and calculates its maximum assessed value. Property owners are taxed on the lesser of the two, which is referred to as the assessed value. The Assessor’s Office is also responsible for accurately posting all recorded documents, processing mapping changes, managing county GIS data, and maintaining records pertaining to property ownership, manufactured structures, commercial personal property and exemption program.

Appraiser

The Appraiser determines the real market value of real property, including residential, business personal property, manufactured structures, commercial property and agricultural land for tax assessment purposes. After the real market value is established, the assessed value is then calculated. Additionally, the Appraiser analyzes sales data to determine trends and averages as indicators of value, and answers inquiries of the public relative to assessment values and appraisals, land ownership, property taxes and other varied topics.
